Universalis on Windows Mobile (and Pocket PC)
On Windows Mobile, the Catholic Calendar program and the Universalis program are the same thing.
One downloaded program gives you all the Catholic Calendar features plus a month's trial of the Universalis features.
Once you have decided that you want to have the full features of the Universalis program, you can unlock them by buying and entering a registration code.
System requirements
You need a device running Windows Mobile 5 or later, or Pocket PC 3.0 or later (including Pocket PC 2002). Smartphones are not usually suitable: see the next paragraph. All handhelds manufactured after 2002 are suitable, as well as many that were manufactured before then. If you have an old device then you can check the version of the operating system with Start > Settings > System > About.
Not all Windows Mobile devices are suitable for Universalis. In general, any device that uses a touchscreen and stylus should work, and devices (typically smartphones) that use just a keypad or a touchscreen will probably not work. The only way to be certain is to try downloading and installing the program. If a device is not suitable, it will refuse to load or install the program.
You need 6MB of free memory on your device.
Downloading and installation
Using a PC running Windows
(This is the preferred method).
Download the following file to your PC: UnivPPC.exe.
Your browser may let you choose between opening the file and saving it. We usually prefer to save our downloaded files and open them separately later: if you do this, remember which folder (directory) your browser has saved the file into so that you can find it afterwards!
Once the download has completed:
- Connect your device to your PC.
- Double-click on the
UnivPPC.exefile that you downloaded (depending on how your computer is set up, the icon may simply say "UnivPPC" rather than "UnivPPC.exe"), and follow the instructions. - Once the installation has been completed, you can delete
UnivPPC.exe.
Installing Universalis on a storage card
If you want to install Universalis on a storage card rather than in main memory, you can do this by saying "No" when ActiveSync asks you whether to install it to the default location. ActiveSync will then offer you a choice of locations including the storage card.
If you install Universalis on a storage card then it will not appear on the Today screen when you reset your device. This behaviour has been designed into Windows Mobile / Pocket PC and is outside our control. See The Today Screen for a description of how to get round the problem.
Accessing the Internet directly from your Windows Mobile device
We do not officially support this method, but it has been tried on one or two mobile devices and it has worked.
Download the following file to your mobile device: UnivPPC.cab.
Note that this is file is a lot larger than UnivPPC.exe. It
is about 5.5MB in size.
Your device will ask you whether to save and open the file. Tell it to do so. Once the download has completed, the software will be installed automatically.
Note that in this case you will not see the licence agreement. Our licence agreement is very simple. It tells you that although we have tried to ensure that there are no bugs in the software, we accept no liability for the consequences of any bugs or incompatibilities that may remain.
Operation
See the separate instructions.
Updating to a new version
From time to time we release new versions of the Universalis programs. You can update to the latest version free of charge simply by downloading and installing it on top of the version you already have.
To make sure that you don't miss an update, you may want to join the Universalis mailing list.
